Top to toe luxury - Hicks & Brown
In this post, we’re really excited to be talking about a brand that is already familiar to those with a taste for luxurious country-lifestyle inspired hats and accessories– Hicks & Brown. We at The Finer Horse were delighted to go behind the scenes with founders Alice and Rosie to find out more about this exciting brand and their future plans.
Started in 2014, Hicks & Brown was set up by Alice and Rosie as a result of the roaring success of their first showcase at the Suffolk County Show, which featured clothes and customised accessories the girls had designed and made themselves, and which had already proved very popular among friends and family. Alice and Rosie had initially embarked upon careers in London, but were thrilled to be able to return to their Suffolk home a couple of years after that initial showcase to build on their early success. Drawing inspiration from their mother, a renowned dressmaker and designer who they credit with inspiring in them a love of textiles and design, Alice and Rosie have since grown Hicks & Brown into a brand that encapsulates quality and durability with a timeless appeal, and where products are designed to work equally well on city streets as in the field.
With a passion for the British countryside, it’s no surprise that Hicks & Brown are champions of British design and manufacturing. Although not everything is currently made in Britain, Alice and Rosie design everything themselves in their studio and are careful to source manufacturers that can deliver the quality they require – some of which are even in their home county of Suffolk. Many siblings would struggle to work so closely together but Alice and Rosie cite a close relationship and differing skill sets as their key to successful teamwork, although they do admit it can be a challenge to switch off and talk about something else when out with family and friends!
We’ve really enjoyed seeing the award-winning Hicks & Brown pop-up shop at major events such as Burghley Horse Trials and The Game Fair this year and we’re assured this will continue, alongside the planned expansion of the list of independent stockists around the UK for those of us that like to ‘try’ before we buy. Despite experimenting with some lovely clothing, the girls have decided to focus on expanding the accessories side of their business, and over the next year or so we can look forward to seeing a larger range of exciting hat, bag and belt designs as well as an expanded range of men’s accessories.
So what are our key picks from the current Hicks & Brown range? While the brand is best known for their gorgeous wool fedoras with a game bird feather plume at one side, we love this version of their Suffolk Fedora, which features a wrap of pheasant feathers that runs all the way round the brow band of the hat. This take on the classic fedora gives a subtle feel that works equally well on the streets of London as it does among country hedgerows and enables the wearer to create a slightly different overall look.
The next standout product for us was this stunning Acido Gold clutch bag with a contrasting teal-coloured tassel. We’re firm believers that a girl can never have too many handbag options and this gorgeous clutch offers something we haven’t seen elsewhere, combining a lovely pale-coloured cow hide with splashes of shimmer from the gold patches that works for both a daytime and nighttime look. We love the little details that make this bag extra special, from the choice of bag size – just big enough for the essentials but without being too big to comfortably hold – to the matching tassel colour and zip stopper feature.
Finally, those of us who feel the cold are always on the lookout for cosy but stylish socks to get us through the chillier months, and Hicks & Brown have nailed this too. This pretty pair of salmon pink long socks could easily find themselves either on the grouse moor or with a jumper, pair of jeans and long boots for weekend exploring, and are a slightly lighter knit than other, similar socks we’ve seen. We love this all-year round versatility, and the Merino wool mix would stand up to being worn again and again – a classic example of the style, quality and durability that have made Hicks & Brown a brand to be reckoned with.
