Riding out the winter freeze - 5 stylish riding coat options we love
With the wintry weather well and truly upon us, we at The Finer Horse wanted to bring you our picks of the best winter coats for riding. Designed to look equally stylish both in and out of the saddle, we think you’ll love these coats from some of our favourite equestrian brands.
Mark Todd Ladies Deluxe Long Padded Coat
First up is this snuggly but practical knee-length coat from Mark Todd. We particularly love the (detachable) faux fur collar, perfect for keeping you really toasty for the inevitable long periods of time outside that horses involve. The longer length of this coat makes it a perfect choice for instructors, but the coat comes with a long two-way zip at the back to easily convert this into a saddle-friendly coat. We love the little details on this well-thought-out coat, such as the zips on the cuffs to enable them to be rolled out of the way for some of the messier yard jobs, and the flashes of teal along the edges pockets and fastenings add a gorgeous pop of colour to the silver/grey option shown here.
Caldene Ora women’s padded windproof jacket
Next up is an offering from another classic equestrian brand, the Ora padded windproof jacket from Caldene. Keeping things simple in black with a removable faux-fur trimmed hood, this jacket is both wind- and waterproof, and has been given a finish designed to repel dirt and hair. With practical zip pockets and double rear vents to make the jacket saddle-friendly, the style-stakes are also covered with rose gold trimmings and an adjustable waist – perfect for creating a more fitted look.
Euro Star Fabi Padded Jacket
For those of us who love a bit of colour, we couldn’t resist this bright blue jacket from Euro Star. With clever elasticated cuffs at both wrists and the bottom of the jacket, there isn’t any danger of getting a cold blast of air up the back of the jacket or sleeve as you go about those yard duties. More clever details include the plethora of zip pockets for keeping your phone and keys safe, and the combination of a detachable hood and with its own faux fur edges gives you the versatility to keep warm enough in a variety of temperatures.
Ariat Madden H2O parka
If you’re after a riding coat that could also hold its own in the fashion stakes, then look no further than the Ariat Madden H2O parka. Waterproof and with a bit of stretch to allow for flexibility in the saddle, this coat is specifically designed to keep you warm and dry in the wettest weather. Although perhaps not as good for the really extreme cold, this parka is a great choice for the majority of weather conditions, and the saddle vents and extra-large hood - specially designed to fit over a riding hat – will keep you warm and comfy in all but the coldest conditions.
Harcour Oural padded coat
Lastly, we love this classic design from Harcour, with their Oural padded coat. The seriously cosy fleece layer inside the coat adds the practicality you need from a winter riding coat, as do the interior pocket details, but this coat offers some serious style to those after a more pared back look. With a detachable faux fur trimmed hood and a feminine fit that’s cut closer to the body than other coats on the market, this coat would bring some serious style to any yard.
