Wittily illustrating the world - Katie Cardew Illustrations
If you were at Burghley this year, a wander round the (enormous) shopping village would have taken you past the packed stand of Katie Cardew Illustrations. Along with most of Burghley’s attendees, we fell instantly in love with her sell-out ‘I’d rather be at Burghley’ print and we wanted to bring you more of her work, as well as revealing a little more about the artist behind the designs.
With a background in architectural illustration, which can be seen in her wonderful drawings of such diverse subjects as Moscow’s St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Taj Mahal, Katie has found a real niche for herself in capturing British life in a quietly witty and charming format. Often working to commission, illustrating both families and their houses (a service so popular Katie is often fully booked for months in advance), Katie has also created a gorgeous range of prints and homewares that span the country/city divide, enabling those of us without a house lovely enough to be drawn to still acquire a piece of Katie’s work.
While there is a range of pieces that are very much suited to the country lifestyle, such as the prints and homewares dedicated to rural towns and wildlife, Katie also has a plethora of designs that wouldn’t look out of place in the sleekest city penthouse. Her series of London landmark illustrations would make a fantastic focal point on any wall, and her monochrome print of the same landmarks in miniature, on a dark grey background look wonderful as a wallpaper.
Despite the gloriously rich pickings available on Katie’s website, there were three standout items that we just had to bring you in more detail…
Game birds tea towel
Perfect for both those who have the country kitchen and those who can only dream of one, Katie’s heart-warming print of some of Britain’s best loved game bird species on a tea towel is a lovely way to brighten up one of the more tedious household tasks.
‘Please pour me a…’ print
As soon as we saw this print we added it to our ‘must have’ list. We love the idea of, perhaps having had a particularly rough day, being able to merely point to the drink we feel most in need of while a very kind person makes it for us! Failing that, the lovely print serves as fantastic inspiration for that cocktail party, as well as being a stylish addition to any wall.
Epitomising the perfect travel journal, this A5 bound notebook, covered in images of some of the world’s best known landmarks, is a great way of carrying round a little piece of Katie’s illustrative world with you wherever you go. Perfect as a gift for those ‘difficult to buy for’ friends or family members, it makes us want to book some plane tickets right now!
